Global energy storage provider Sungrow has formalised an expansion initiative with Malaysian engineering firm ERS Energy, with a combined one gigawatt-hour (GWh) in battery storage projects across Malaysia and the Philippines.

The expanded partnership directly targets the growing demand for grid stability and flexible capacity across Southeast Asian power markets.

In Malaysia, the companies are working on the 441 megawatt-hour (MWh), four-hour MyBeST battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Bahau.

With ERS Energy acting as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, the development forms part of a national large-scale energy storage drive led by the Energy Commission of Malaysia.

The facility will capture surplus solar generation during peak production hours and dispatch power when required, lessening reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants.

In the Philippines, the joint venture is delivering a 556 MWh, four-hour storage facility for renewable energy operator ACEN.

A defining feature of the Philippine project is its grid-forming functionality, which enables the battery infrastructure to actively stabilise grid voltage and frequency.

The system will also trade directly on the country’s Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), allowing real-time power dispatch aligned with market price signals.

“The question for Southeast Asia is no longer whether we can generate more renewable energy, but whether our power systems are ready to support it,” said Michael Ruan, Southeast Asia Director of Sungrow.

“That is where energy storage makes the difference. Together with ERS Energy, we are helping build the flexibility and resilience needed to unlock more renewable energy and deliver reliable power for communities and businesses across the region.”

The dual-country deployments highlight how tailored energy storage configurations can simultaneously reinforce grid resilience and provide commercial market flexibility as Southeast Asia accelerates its clean energy transition.

Looking ahead, Sungrow will continue to empower partners across Southeast Asia with advanced energy storage solutions to strengthen grids, enable greater renewable energy integration and build a more resilient energy future.
