AGL has partnered with dairy and food manufacturer Bega Group to deliver a 1.23-megawatt rooftop solar system at its Wetherill Park manufacturing facility in Western Sydney.
The solar installation spans a complex multi-building layout, featuring more than 2,400 individual solar panels mounted across interconnected rooftops. The system is equivalent in size to roughly 187 typical Australian household solar setups.
The commercial solar array is expected to cut carbon emissions linked to the site’s electricity consumption by 9 per cent in its first year of operation, helping Bega Group advance towards its long-term sustainability and emissions reduction targets.
Delivered through a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA), the commercial model allows Bega Group to access site-generated renewable energy without needing upfront capital expenditure.
Under the arrangement, AGL will design, build, own, and operate the rooftop system across its operational lifecycle.
AGL General Manager for Commercial and Industrial Energy Solutions, Brendan Weinert, said the project demonstrates how on-site renewable energy can provide functional decarbonisation pathways for heavy industry.
“For businesses like Bega Group, rooftop solar can be a practical way to cut emissions and reduce reliance on grid electricity,” Weinert said.
“As more businesses look to manage costs and plan for their future energy needs, we’re working with customers to put the right mix of solar and other energy solutions in place.”
The initiative reflects an accelerating trend among major Australian commercial and industrial energy users seeking to integrate clean technology to manage operational overheads and lower emissions.
AGL’s commercial solar solutions aim to help large-scale industrial customers reduce their carbon footprint while lowering long-term exposure to grid pricing fluctuations.
