Intium secures contract powering Mulwala Solar

Intium, an Australian company specialising in transformative change in complex and emerging energy services, has secured a significant connection contract for the 32MW Mulwala Solar Farm in southern New South Wales.

The contract was awarded by European Energy Australia and involves the delivery of connection infrastructure under a Build, Own, Operate and Maintain (BOOM) agreement.

Located near Lambruk, approximately two kilometres north of Mulwala, the project scope includes design, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 22kV switching station.

Additionally, the project comprises a two-kilometre underground cable linking the solar farm to Essential Energy’s Mulwala Zone Substation.

Finalised on 8 September 2025, Intium was selected after a competitive tender process due to its extensive experience in managing complex infrastructure projects and in-depth industry expertise.

Intium’s early involvement addressed critical environmental approvals and technical complexities.

The company will now advance the project in collaboration with European Energy and local network operator Essential Energy to ensure seamless integration into the existing distribution network.

Construction on-site is anticipated to begin this month, with the solar farm scheduled to be energised in 2026.

The Mulwala Solar Farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 20,800 homes, potentially reducing carbon emissions by approximately 44,800 tonnes annually, supporting Australia’s sustainable energy future for decades to come.

Babu Kumar, General Manager Engineering & Delivery at Intium, stated: “This is a significant milestone for Intium and Australia’s transition to renewable energy.

“It reflects the confidence our clients have in our ability to deliver technically complex infrastructure with agility and precision.

Kumar stated that Intium partnered closely with European Energy to create a cost-effective solution via an open and transparent process, taking the lead on important planning approvals.

He noted this approach allowed the project to progress rapidly, confidently, and in a genuine spirit of collaboration.

Catriona McLeod, European Energy’s Country Manager for Australia, added: “We’re delighted to be working with Intium – a company with a strong record and reliable reputation.

“The team at Intium have been invaluable in helping us minimise risk and get this complex project up and running.”

Nathan Rhodes, Executive General Manager at Intium, emphasised the company’s commitment: “Our mission at Intium is to transform Australia for a clean energy future, and this project is a prime example of our commitment to making that a reality in a cost-effective, innovative, and reliable way.

Rhodes highlighted that the team brings together more than 200 years of combined expertise, employing a local workforce and managing every phase of the value chain.

He emphasised their comprehensive capabilities, spanning project development support, feasibility studies, technical connections modelling, design and engineering, construction, stakeholder engagement, all the way through to operations and maintenance.

Intium’s innovative approach included offering flexible commercial models in partnership with European Energy, providing a transparent and collaborative process to deliver the most bankable solution.

Aligned with Australia’s ambitious 2030 and 2050 net-zero goals, projects like the Mulwala Solar Farm play a crucial role in accelerating the transition from coal-based power to renewable energy sources.
