AGL subsidiary proposes 500MW Mount Britton BESS in Queensland

05 Nov, 2026

AGL Energy Ltd. subsidiary Mount Britton Battery Pty Ltd has submitted plans to develop a major battery energy storage system near Nebo in central Queensland.

The proposed Mount Britton Battery will feature a delivery capacity of up to 500 megawatts (MW) and up to 2,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of total usable storage.

Designed with an operational lifespan of 20 years or more, the project may be constructed in a single 500 MW phase or across two stages of up to 250 MW each.

The proposed project is now under assessment under the federal government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.

Key infrastructure for the development includes battery modules, inverters, transformers, grid connection equipment, control facilities, security fencing, acoustic walls, and stormwater management systems. Additional low-impact works, such as geotechnical testing and cultural heritage surveys, will precede main construction.

Situated at 3 Suttor Developmental Road within the Isaac Regional Council area, the 26.9-hectare site lies approximately six kilometres north of Nebo and 75 kilometres southwest of Mackay.

The project sits immediately east of Powerlink’s existing 275-kilovolt Nebo Substation, providing crucial access to regional transmission infrastructure.

AGL has designed the development footprint to minimise environmental impacts. The direct disturbance area is restricted to 15.6 hectares on previously cleared or non-remnant grazing land, intentionally avoiding a nearby natural watercourse.

Furthermore, an 11.3-hectare environmental avoidance area across the eastern portion of the site will be strictly preserved to protect local flora and fauna habitats and retain regional ecological connectivity.

Connection infrastructure linking the facility to the adjacent Powerlink substation will be managed as a separate scope of work by a designated transmission operator.

Once operational, the Mount Britton project will support grid stability and firm renewable energy integration across regional Queensland, aligning with broader national efforts to transition toward clean energy storage solutions.
