Contract awarded for landmark solar system at Western Sydney Airport

Solar and energy storage provider Trinasolar has been chosen to supply panels for the inaugural clean energy project at Western Sydney International Airport ahead of its scheduled opening in late 2026.

The installation will feature 8,824 Trinasolar Vertex S+ 510W modules. The rooftop system spans the airport’s main terminal roof, both piers, and covered car park walkways, delivering a total capacity of 4.5 megawatts peak (MWp).

Given the sensitive aviation environment, detailed glare studies were conducted to ensure the installations protect pilots and air traffic controllers from unwanted reflections.

Edison Zhou, Head of Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands at Trinasolar, highlighted the importance of reliable technology in major infrastructure projects.

“For EPCs, reliability and bankability are critical. We combine globally proven solar technology with dedicated Australian after-sales support, giving our partners confidence in both the products they install and the manufacturer behind them,” Zhou said.

The project marks a key milestone Trinasolar’s decade-long partnership with Smart Commercial Energy. The build was carried out alongside electrical contractor Heyday 5 and builder Multiplex.

Ben Adamson, head of Projects and Performance at Smart Commercial Energy, said the install represents one of the largest airport solar projects in Australia.

“I’m really proud of what our team and partners delivered, on time and on budget,” Adamson said.

Smart Commercial Energy Managing Director Huon Hoogesteger added that renewable energy and world-class infrastructure go hand-in-hand.

Once operational, the rooftop system is expected to generate over 5,800 megawatt-hours of renewable energy annually, avoiding roughly 3,712 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Additionally, 1.3 megawatt of capacity is installed directly across the airport’s covered walkway canopies.
