Who would have thought your old jeans could insulate your home?

Who would have thought your old jeans could insulate your home?

Australia is facing a devastating waste crisis, all whilst relying on outdated, toxic materials to build its future. Planet Protector is rewriting that story.

Every year, more than 300,000 tonnes of textile waste is generated in Australia, 220,000 of which is dumped in landfills. This is the equivalent of nearly four Sydney Harbour Bridges. At the same time, Australia’s construction industry produces a staggering 29 million tonnes of waste annually. That’s 141kgs wasted for every square metre built.

These materials are not only toxic to the environment but also harmful to human health. Conventional construction materials are fossil fuel-derived, dangerous to handle, and linked to serious long-term health risks. The current ‘alternatives’ on the market are outdated and don’t meet international quality standards. This is not just unsustainable; it is unacceptable.

PLANET PROTECTOR IS THE NEW FORCE IN BUILDING CIRCULARITY

Planet Protector is closing the loop on waste and redefining the future of sustainable construction materials. They aren’t just diverting waste; they are manufacturing scalable, design-ready solutions for buildings, fit-outs, and furniture.

Their facility marks a transformative shift in Australia’s construction sector, enabling the local production of high-quality regenerative alternatives that support industries, create jobs, and build circularity.

THEIR NEWLY LAUNCHED JEANIUSTM DENIM INSULATION IS A BOLD STEP FORWARD

Crafted from recycled denim, JEANIUSTM outperforms traditional materials where it counts. Designed as a high-performance insulation, JEANIUSTM is a safer and sustainable alternative for healthy, energy-efficient homes. JEANIUSTM denim insulation delivers not only exceptional thermal insulation but also industry-leading acoustic performance.

Delivering thermal performance up to R6.0 and exceptional acoustic performance with an NRC of 1, JEANIUSTM helps reduce noise because its dense recycled fibres absorb sound effectively. When installed properly, it fills the space tightly, preventing gaps that can let sound pass through.

JEANIUSTM is the first of its kind in Australia, providing a new life for denim waste and closing the loop on textile and construction waste. JEANIUSTM naturally regulates indoor temperatures and improves air quality, actively absorbing airborne pollutants like formaldehyde.

For Planet Protector, sustainability is not a trend, nor a buzzword. The company has redefined waste and created pathways for Australian industries to move away from harmful materials to solutions that regenerate, restore, and reduce emissions.

MEETING PASSIVHAUS STANDARDS CIRCULAR PERFORMANCE IN ACTION

When GLUX Builders set out to construct a Passivhaus home in Warrandyte, Victoria, the team needed materials that could deliver exceptional thermal performance while supporting their commitment to sustainable building practices.

To achieve this, the project incorporated JEANIUS recycled denim insulation, helping the build meet the rigorous energy efficiency standards required for Passivhaus certification while also enhancing the overall comfort of the home.

Beyond thermal performance, the insulation contributed significant acoustic benefits, creating the calm, quiet internal environments Passivhaus homes are known for.

“You can really feel it as you walk into the building. It’s not just the thermal properties; it has some amazing acoustic properties too,” said Andrew Healey, Product Innovation & Business Development Manager at Bowens, while visiting the project site.

Rather than sending excess material to landfill, the G-LUX team collect the off-cuts and returned them to Planet Protector, where they are recycled and incorporated back into future insulation production.

“We bag the offcuts, take them back to Planet Protector, and they add them to our next order,” Jesse said. “It’s that easy.”

This circular approach not only reduced site waste but also helped the project maintain its strong sustainability credentials, truly closing the loop.

From fashion runways to the rooftops of Australian homes, JEANIUS serves as a powerful reminder that waste only becomes waste when we fail to see its potential.

INSULATE WITH PURPOSE. BUILD WITH DENIM.
