The Australian government has extended the consultation period for the feasibility licence application of the Catalpa Offshore Wind Farm, located within the Bunbury Offshore Declared Area in Western Australia.
This extension allows the project to continue advancing discussions with prospective Tier 1 industry partners, crucial for its development.
Situated about 40 kilometres off the WA coast, the Catalpa Offshore Wind Farm is a significant renewable energy initiative designed to deliver 2 gigawatts (GW) of power.
The project aims to support industrial decarbonisation and enhance energy security in the Kwinana Industrial Area, a major industrial hub in the region. Catalpa Offshore Wind Farm Pty Ltd is a partnership between Wind with Purpose (WWP), Barrington Energy, and the Gnaala Karla Booja Aboriginal Corporation (GKB), reflecting a collaborative approach that includes First Nations communities.
Catalpa’s CEO, Chris Kearney, expressed gratitude for the decision by Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy and the Offshore Infrastructure Registrar, stating: “We sincerely appreciate Minister Bowen’s recognition of the significance of these partnership discussions.
“The extension gives us the space to progress conversations with prospective partners while ensuring strong alignment with Catalpa’s vision and values.
“Catalpa is deeply rooted in community engagement, investment, and long-term benefits for First Nations and regional communities.
“We look forward to progressing our discussions and moving another step closer to making the Catalpa Offshore Wind Farm a reality.”
The extension of the consultation period is seen as a strategic step, providing the necessary timeframe to secure the right partners and advance the project’s feasibility, aligning with broader Australian renewable energy goals.
The Bunbury Offshore Declared Area, assessed and designated by the Minister after extensive consultation with local leaders, industry, First Nations groups, and community stakeholders, is central to the Australian government’s renewable energy transition plans.
The Catalpa Offshore Wind Farm represents a breakthrough opportunity to contribute a substantial renewable energy resource, supporting the decarbonisation of heavy industry and ensuring a reliable energy supply in the region while fostering economic benefits and sustainable development for the community and Indigenous partners.
