Fortescue produces first low-emissions metal at Christmas Creek

Fortescue has achieved a breakthrough in its pursuit of low-emissions steelmaking, producing its first batch of hot metal at the Christmas Creek green metal project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

The milestone represents the first operational success of the facility’s electric smelting furnace, providing a critical proof-of-concept for processing native Pilbara iron ore into commercial-grade green metal.

The pilot trial forms part of Fortescue’s broader strategy to establish a local downstream processing industry rather than relying solely on raw mineral exports.

Initial molten metal output was achieved using a blended ore feedstock as part of progressive site commissioning. Operations will now advance through phased testing to refine, optimise, and scale up the technology.

Fortescue Metals CEO Dino Otranto described it a pivotal step towards building commercial-scale green metal operations on home soil.

“For decades Australia has exported iron ore to the world. The next opportunity is to create more value from that ore by producing green metal here at home,” Otranto said.

“Australia has some of the world’s best renewable energy resources and one of the world’s largest iron ore industries. That’s a competitive advantage we should be building on. If we don’t, other renewable-rich countries will.”

Otranto noted that commercialising green iron derived from Pilbara ore remains an unsolved global engineering challenge.

Standard low-carbon ironmaking technologies generally require high-grade ores, making the processing of lower-grade Pilbara ores a major technical hurdle for global steel decarbonisation.

“The real opportunity goes beyond green metal. It’s about building a new industrial economy around Australia’s renewable energy advantage,” Otranto said.

“Nobody has solved green metal production using Pilbara ore at commercial scale yet. That’s the challenge we’re taking on.”

Fortescue will continue phased commissioning at the Pilbara facility to evaluate operational parameters before making further commitments towards scaled commercial production.
