Wambo Wind Farm joins Queensland’s race to renewables

Ground has been broken and construction has officially begun on the Wambo Wind Farm, northwest of Dalby in Queensland. The milestone comes less than a week after the government announced a further half a billion dollars of investment to propel the development of large-scale solar and wind projects, and its commitment to maintain a majority share in energy generation. The Wambo Wind Farm is backed by a $192.5 million investment from the Queensland Government’s Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund for Stanwell’s 50 per centc share in the project. The wind farm, which will soon host some of the larg... more

Vast advances utility-scale concentrated solar thermal plant

Vast Solar Pty Ltd, a renewable energy company specialising in concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) energy systems that generate zero-carbon, utility-scale, dispatchable electricity and industrial process heat, has awarded Worley Ltd. key engineering contracts for its VS1 CSP project. Basic engineering is to be completed by July with ground breaking slated for 2024. VS1 is a 30MW / 288 MWh CSP plant being built in Port Augusta, South Australia. Utilising Vast’s proprietary modular tower CSP v3.0 technology, VS1 will generate clean, low-cost, dispatchable power with over 8 hours of thermal energy storag... more

Major renewables overhaul for pumped hydro powerhouse

Queensland’s largest hydro power station will undergo a $17 million overhaul to ensure it continues to operate safely and reliably while delivering clean power for generations. Major maintenance works have started at the publicly-owned Wivenhoe Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Station this month, creating 100 jobs under the Palaszczuk Government’s Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan. Wivenhoe Pumped Hydro Power Station has two massive 285MW turbines and these planned maintenance works take place every five years which is critical for the long-term reliability of Queensland’s only existing pumped hydro ... more

Fast-tracked VNI West vital for energy transition

Energy Networks Australia (ENA) has welcomed the Victorian Government’s next steps to progress the much needed VNI West Interconnector. ENA CEO Dom van den Berg said the transmission infrastructure was essential to enable secure reliable electricity to be shared between the states and delivered to households across the Victorian and NSW power grids. “Australia is moving at pace to a renewables based energy system but is hampered by a lack of transmission infrastructure,” she said. “Supporting the development of critical transmission will deliver renewable energy from where it is generated to whe... more

Queensland infrastructure project a leader in sustainability

The Logan Enhancement Project has been awarded the first Leading rating in Queensland by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA).  The rating is the first and only national sustainability rating tool for infrastructure, measuring sustainability performance across the quadruple bottom line (environmental, social, economic and governance). The $512 million project includes upgrading parts of the Logan and Gateway Extension motorways, improving key congestion hot spots (Mt Lindesay Highway/Beaudesert Road interchange and the Wembley Road/Logan Motorway interchange) and constructing new ... more

Sydney stadium first in the world to gain sustainability rating

The Bankwest Stadium in the Greater Sydney City of Parramatta has become the first stadium in the world to announce it has achieved LEED v4 Gold certification for sustainability from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). An internationally recognised accreditation system, LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design was developed by the USGBC to promote and recognise world class sustainable building strategies and practices globally. The revised LEED v4 for Building Design and Construction certification raises the bar to award projects that achieve better environmental, social and economic impacts... more

Victoria’s largest mass timber project tops out

Multiplex has reached a major construction milestone on La Trobe University’s $100 million student accommodation project at its Bundoora campus, topping out the mass timber twin building development. This project is the largest mass timber construction project currently underway in Victoria, with the entire development utilising a full cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam structure. Designed by JCB Architects to be highly sustainable, the project will deliver an additional 624 beds across two separate buildings linked by common amenities and landscaping. When complete it will bring the total number of... more

Brisbane office recognised as global ‘Game Changer’

Australian independent engineering consultancy, Floth, has received further global recognition for its innovative Brisbane headquarters, which is the only building in Australia nominated as a ‘Game Changer’ in the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) Online Case Study Library. In fact, the office complex, located at 69 Robertson Street in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, is one of only three buildings in the world that has been designated as a ‘Game Changer’ – from a list of 128 projects. Repurposing power stations for renewable thermal energy storage solutions

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has confirmed $422,582 in funding for AGL Energy Limited (AGL) to investigate the viability of retrofitting the Torrens Island Power Station B in South Australia with thermal energy storage technology. The $1.01 million total feasibility study would investigate options to use grid electricity to charge the thermal energy storage and discharge through one of the power station’s existing 200 MW steam turbines, which ordinarily runs on gas, when electricity is required on the grid. The study will test the feasibility of repurposing existing electricity infrastr... more

Repurposing Broken Hill mine for renewable energy storage using compressed air

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has conditionally approved $45 million in funding to construct a 200 MW / 1600 MWh fuel-free energy storage facility, developed by Hydrostor Inc, utilising their Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES) technology and repurposing a disused mine at Broken Hill, New South Wales. ARENA’s funding for the Silver City Energy Storage Project, developed by Hydrostor, is conditional upon the project reaching financial close, which is expected to occur in late 2023. Once built, the project will be one of the world’s largest compressed air projects, providin... more

Partners to investigate thermal energy storage at Torrens Island

AGL Energy and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) have announced a feasibility study to investigate the viability of using a thermal battery to power a steam turbine at AGL’s Torrens Island Power Station in South Australia.
