Synergy has awarded SCEE Electrical a $160 million contract to undertake crucial works for the Collie Battery Energy Storage System (CBESS1) in Western Australia.

The Collie battery, with a capacity of 500 megawatts/2000 megawatt hours, is set to become one of the largest batteries in the world upon completion.

The project aims to enhance the state’s energy infrastructure and support its transition to renewable energy sources.

SCEE Electrical’s scope of work includes the installation and commissioning of approximately 640 battery container units, 160 inverters, and 220 kilometres of high-voltage cabling.

Additionally, the project involves managing a laydown facility at the Port of Bunbury to facilitate the logistical requirements.

Expected to be operational by late 2025, the CBESS1 project is anticipated to create up to 500 jobs at its peak, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

This initiative aligns with the State Government’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

WA Energy Minister Reece Whitby emphasised the positive impact of the contract on job creation and the local economy.

He stated: “This contract will mean more jobs for Western Australians and be of great benefit to the local economy.”

He also highlighted the crucial role the Collie battery will play in the state’s transition to cleaner energy sources.

Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of the Collie battery project for the region.

She said: “Collie’s Big Battery project will ensure Collie remains vital to the ongoing energy needs of Western Australians.”

She added that Collie’s legacy in the energy sector will continue, with the battery project being a cornerstone of this transition.

The Collie battery project is part of Synergy’s broader commitment to deliver sustainable energy solutions.

It follows the successful implementation of the Kwinana Battery Stage One and the ongoing construction of Kwinana Battery Stage Two.
