The most innovative engineers and engineering projects in Victoria were celebrated at the 2024 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards — People and Projects, held at the Victorian Arts Centre on September 12.
The prestigious event recognised outstanding achievements in engineering across various categories, with winners set to represent Victoria at the national awards gala dinner on November 21 in Brisbane.
Swinburne University of Technology’s Victorian Hydrogen Hub — CSIRO Hydrogen Refuelling Station, submitted by Pacific Energy, was named Victoria Project of the Year.
This groundbreaking facility is Australia’s first all-in-one fast hydrogen refuelling station, marking a significant advancement in sustainable transport.
Professor Chun-Qing Li from RMIT University received the Victoria Professional Engineer of the Year award for his 30-year career in structural engineering and leadership in carbon-neutral infrastructure research.
Dr Hua Qian Ang of RMIT University was recognised as Victoria Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year for her innovative work in engineering education and sustainability.
Other notable recipients included Professor Mahdi Jalili of RMIT University, who was awarded the Electrical College MA Sargent Medal for his work integrating AI with renewable energy, and Miles Pierce, formerly of GHD, who received the Engineering Heritage Australia John Monash Medal for his efforts in preserving Australia’s engineering heritage.
Engineers Australia General Manager — Victoria, Jerry Andrews, emphasised the importance of these awards in recognising engineers’ contributions and inspiring future talent in the profession.
The event was supported by category partners including Edith Cowan University, Bluebeam, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, and Metecno.
