The Northern Territory’s Environment Protection Authority has opened public consultation on a proposed project submitted by Provaris Energy Ltd to construct and operate green hydrogen production and export facilities on Melville Island, namely the Tiwi H2 Project.
Provaris Energy Ltd proposes to construct and operate green hydrogen production and export facilities on Melville Island in the NT. The proposed activities include construction of a solar precinct, electrolyser facility, desalination plant, battery storage facilities, hydrogen compression facilities, transmission infrastructure, and expanded accommodation facilities at Port Melville.
Construction is anticipated to commence in 2024, with hydrogen production and export expected to commence in early 2027 at an initial rate likely to be 25,000 – 50,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of hydrogen.
Further construction stage(s) will increase capacity up to the 100,000 tpa target level by the early 2030s. Project operation is expected to continue for approximately 30 years.
Public feedback will be considered by the NT EPA in deciding whether the proposed action requires environmental impact assessment, and if so, the required method of assessment.
Consultation helps the NT EPA and the proponent to identify issues of concern and potential effects, as well as getting feedback from stakeholders on project options or potential mitigation measures.
Consultation is open until 30 August 2022.
