Neoen has secured a 10-year renewable energy baseload agreement to supply power to BHP’s copper mines in South Australia, commencing July 2029.
This new 100 MW contract builds on Neoen and BHP’s initial 70 MW baseload deal, which began in July 2025.
To fulfill the agreement, Neoen will combine the output from its upcoming Goyder North Wind Farm with storage capacity from the Goyder Battery, using its advanced energy management capabilities.
The construction of these assets will take Neoen’s total contribution to South Australia’s energy transition past 1.5 GW.
Neoen will supply power to BHP’s Olympic Dam, Carrapateena, and Prominent Hill mines, collectively one of the world’s most significant copper basins.
The new agreement will deliver a 24/7 supply combining energy from the first 300 MW phase of the Goyder North Wind Farm and storage from Goyder Battery, with at least 200 MW / 800 MWh capacity.
Together with the existing 70 MW contract powered by Goyder South Stage 1 Wind Farm and Blyth Battery, these two power purchase agreements (PPAs) are expected to meet approximately 70 per cent of BHP’s South Australian electricity demand from renewables by 2030.
Anna Wiley, BHP’s Asset President for Copper South Australia, said: “BHP’s Copper SA operations are taking another step forward in our decarbonisation journey with its third renewable power arrangement.
“We are using the size and scale of our copper operations to underpin significant new investment in renewable electricity in South Australia.
“[This] announcement, the second power supply arrangement with Neoen, reflects our commitment to more sustainable operations and long-term partnerships.
“Together with our initial arrangement with Neoen, we expect to be able to meet about 70 per cent of Copper SA’s electricity needs from renewable electricity in FY2030.”
The Goyder North Wind Farm, with planning consent for up to 135 turbines generating approximately 1 GW, and the Goyder Battery, approved for up to 900 MW / 3,600 MWh of storage, form part of Neoen’s flagship Goyder Renewables Zone near Burra in South Australia’s Mid-North region.
These projects will create up to 550 construction jobs and around 20 permanent roles, while also contributing benefits to First Nations peoples, the local community, and the environment.
This expanded partnership highlights a significant milestone in South Australia’s push toward sustainable industrial energy use and economic growth through renewable infrastructure.
The combined Neoen-BHP renewable initiatives are set to underpin a more resilient energy future for regional communities and the state at large.
