Queensland has achieved a significant milestone in its clean economy transformation by surpassing its 2030 emissions reduction target of 30 per cent eight years ahead of schedule. The state reached a 35 per cent reduction in emissions in 2022, according to the latest State Greenhouse Gas Inventory data released by the federal government. This accomplishment is largely attributed to Queensland's vegetation management laws, which have led to a substantial reduction in land clearing across the state. The reduction in land clearing has resulted in significant emission reductions in the land sector, highlighting the effectiveness of targeted legislation in driving environmental…
High-interest rates pose challenges to energy transition
Wood Mackenzie's latest report, Conflicts of interest: the cost of investing in the energy transition in a high-interest rate era, highlights the challenges posed by high-interest rates to transitioning to a net-zero global economy. The report suggests that if high-interest rates persist, the transition will become harder and more costly. According to the report, the higher cost of borrowing negatively affects renewables and nascent technologies compared to more established sectors like oil and gas, and metals and mining, which remain somewhat insulated. Peter Martin, Wood Mackenzie's Head of Economics and lead author of the report, stated: "Interest rates, which have…
Renewable energy drives down wholesale prices despite rising demand
Renewable energy generation has played a key role in driving down wholesale electricity prices in Australia's east coast during the first quarter of 2024, according to the latest report from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). Despite higher temperatures leading to increased electricity demand, the growth in renewable energy has helped reduce wholesale spot prices by 8 per cent compared to the same period last year. The report indicates that renewable energy sources accounted for 39 per cent of the energy fed into the grid, up from 37.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2023. This shift towards renewables,…
Queensland introduces pioneering solar panel recycling initiative
In a landmark move, the Queensland government has unveiled a pioneering initiative to revolutionise the recycling of solar panels within the state. With an investment of almost $5.5 million, this program aims to ensure that thousands of solar panels on homes, businesses, and solar farms across the state are recycled and repurposed instead of ending up in landfills. The funding includes $2.5 million dedicated to repurposing residential solar panels for parts, thereby enhancing opportunities for regional communities to benefit directly from renewable energy solutions. Additionally, the solar panel recovery pilot will gather crucial data to inform the development of a…
CSIRO survey reveals Australians’ attitudes towards energy transition
CSIRO has released a comprehensive survey providing insights into Australians' attitudes toward the renewable energy transition. The survey, conducted between August and September 2023, gathered responses from more than 6,700 people across all states and territories, including both capital cities and regional areas. As Australia moves towards a low-carbon energy system, the survey aimed to understand public attitudes towards the renewable energy transition and existing and planned renewable infrastructure. This included solar farms, onshore wind farms, offshore wind farms, and the transmission lines necessary for integrating renewable energy into the electricity grid. According to the survey, Australians prioritise affordability, energy…
Victorian apartment residents embrace solar with new program
Thousands of residents in Victorian apartments are embracing solar power, cutting their electricity bills by up to $500 a year, due to the federal and state governments' $16 million Solar for Apartments program. VIC Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio has announced that due to high demand, the application period for round one of the program has been extended until 31 May 2024. Since applications opened on 13 February, 143 apartment buildings housing 2,477 apartments have applied for the program, with many more expressing interest. Extending the application period will give those yet to apply more time to participate.…
Adani Green Energy surpasses 10,000 MW operational portfolio
Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 10,000 megawatts (MW) of operational portfolio. This includes 7,393 MW of solar capacity, 1,401 MW of wind capacity, and 2,140 MW of wind-solar hybrid capacity, delivering reliable, affordable, and clean power to the national grid. The milestone is said to highlight AGEL's commitment to its goal of achieving 45,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. AGEL's operational portfolio, totalling 10,934 MW, is expected to power more than 5.8 million homes and avoid approximately 21 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani stated: "In…
