Renewable energy generation has played a key role in driving down wholesale electricity prices in Australia’s east coast during the first quarter of 2024, according to the latest report from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
Despite higher temperatures leading to increased electricity demand, the growth in renewable energy has helped reduce wholesale spot prices by 8 per cent compared to the same period last year.
The report indicates that renewable energy sources accounted for 39 per cent of the energy fed into the grid, up from 37.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2023.
This shift towards renewables, particularly from coal-fired power generation, has contributed to lowering prices and reducing the National Electricity Market’s (NEM) emissions intensity to new record lows.
AEMO’s Executive General Manager of Reform Delivery, Violette Mouchaileh, highlighted the significance of this transition, stating: “The move to renewables over traditional coal-fired power generation is well and truly underway and is happening at (a) record pace.”
Despite the overall decrease in wholesale prices, there remains a notable price separation between the NEM’s northern and southern regions.
Queensland recorded the highest regional quarterly average price of $118 per megawatt-hour (MWh), followed by New South Wales at $87/MWh.
In contrast, Victoria recorded the lowest quarterly average price of $52/MWh, despite experiencing severe weather events that caused transmission line loss and generation outages.
The report also highlights the increasing demand for gas in Queensland, driven by higher demand for LNG exports.
This has led to a 10 per cent increase in gas demand compared to the same period last year, with domestic gas supply shifts continuing to impact production.
Overall, the first quarter of 2024 has seen significant developments in Australia’s energy landscape, with renewable energy playing a crucial role in driving down prices and reducing emissions.
As the country continues to transition towards a cleaner energy future, the importance of renewable sources in meeting energy demands and ensuring a sustainable future cannot be overstated.
