Komatsu Australia has taken a significant step towards achieving its goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 50 per cent by 2050 by signing up for a million-dollar pilot program with DHL Express.
The program aims to utilise sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to reduce the emissions related to Komatsu’s air express shipments in Australia in 2024.
The GoGreen Plus program, run by logistics partner DHL Express, will allow Komatsu to invest $1 million to reduce the carbon emissions associated with their international shipments through the use of SAF.
This initiative is part of Komatsu’s broader commitment to sustainability, which includes 27 major sustainability projects aimed at reducing GHG emissions at every possible point.
DHL Express Australia and Papua New Guinea Managing Director Phil Corcoran said: “Sustainable aviation fuel is one of the most effective ways companies can choose to reduce their carbon emissions for their international shipments.
“With GoGreen Plus, companies like Komatsu can track their progress toward their sustainability goals, backed by science-based, verified, and certified reporting on their carbon reduction insets.”
Komatsu Australia General Manager of Safety and Sustainability Henrietta Jukes emphasises that while the SAF trial is a significant step, it is part of a broader effort.
“We are not shifting focus from what we were already doing, but expanding our focus.
“Logistics and transportation is one important area where we can make a difference, and we are also working on making our machines more efficient and exploring opportunities for avoided emissions,” said Henrietta.
Komatsu Australia Executive General Manager of Supply Chain Russell Hodson stated: “Together, we are focused on providing solutions that will support our mining, construction, and quarry customers to reduce their emissions profiles.
“Our aim is to leverage our connections to support positive outcomes for the planet.”
The impact of Komatsu’s investment in the GoGreen Plus program will be announced at the end of the year and audited by an external auditor.
The company remains committed to exploring innovative solutions to reduce its environmental impact and support a sustainable future.
