The Western Australian and federal governments have announced a major expansion of Western Australia’s home battery rebate scheme, paving the way for an estimated 100,000 households to access new financial incentives to store renewable energy, lower their power bills, and contribute to the state’s clean energy transition.
The expanded program combines the $337 million WA Household Battery Rebate with the federal government’s $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries program, ensuring around five times as many households can access the complementary schemes than originally proposed under the state scheme.
Eligible Synergy customers can receive up to $5,000, while Horizon Power customers in regional areas may access up to $7,500 towards the cost of installing a home battery.
In a further boost, four in five WA households will be eligible for no-interest loans of up to $10,000 to help cover upfront costs, with the loans available to those earning less than $210,000 per year.
The total pool for these loans is $200 million, in line with WA Labor’s 2025 election commitment.
Households participating in the scheme will also be able to join Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), allowing them to sell stored energy back to the grid and receive attractive feed-in tariffs.
This not only provides ongoing cost-of-living relief but also strengthens WA’s energy security and supports the broader decarbonisation effort.
Federal Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said: “West Australia’s household solar uptake is world-leading and getting more batteries soaking up our sunshine will be good for bills and good for the grid.
“It means more West Aussies will have access to cheap, fast and safe solar energy in their homes and businesses night or day, when they need it.”
The expanded battery rebate and loan scheme is set to transform WA’s energy landscape, delivering significant financial relief for households and supporting the state’s move towards a cleaner, more secure energy future.
Applications for the rebates and no-interest loans are on track to open on 1 July. More information is available via the WA Residential Battery Scheme website.
