Ocean Reef Marina achieves top sustainability certification

Ocean Reef Marina achieves top sustainability certification

DevelopmentWA’s Ocean Reef Marina has reached a landmark achievement, becoming the first marina development in Australia to secure EnviroDevelopment certification at the maximum level across all six available criteria.

The prestigious recognition, independently awarded by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA), the nation’s peak development industry body, highlights excellence in sustainable design and construction across six key areas: ecosystems, waste, water, energy, materials, and community.

The certification underscores DevelopmentWA’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable urban development.

Ocean Reef Marina’s design incorporates innovative energy solutions, including a renewable energy microgrid to be operated by Ocean Reef Renewable Energy (a Zenith Energy company), alongside smart city technologies and sustainable construction practices.

These features are expected to reduce annual energy bills by up to 30 per cent for future residents and businesses.

The project also places a strong emphasis on native landscaping and biodiversity, fostering green spaces and tree canopies throughout the area.

More than 80 per cent of construction waste is being diverted from landfill, with recycled materials repurposed for use in roads, car parks, drainage, and other aspects of the project.

Planning and Lands and Housing and Works Minister John Carey commented: “With Stage 1 of the project set to open in 2026, Ocean Reef Marina will become a world-class tourism precinct, featuring a diverse mix of residential options, lively local enterprises, and attractions designed to draw visitors throughout the year — all underpinned by leading environmental sustainability practices.

“This certification demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative, environmentally responsible projects that enhance the quality of life for Western Australians.”

With the first phase scheduled to open in 2026, Ocean Reef Marina is poised to set a new standard for sustainable coastal development, blending environmental innovation with vibrant community living.
