The Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm (OWF), one of Taiwan’s largest offshore wind projects, has been officially inaugurated, marking a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy sector.
With a total installed capacity of 640 MW, the wind farm is now fully operational and connected to the grid, solidifying Taiwan’s position as a leader in offshore wind energy in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Yunlin OWF, developed by Yunneng Wind Power Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Skyborn Renewables, TotalEnergies, Electricity Generating Public Company (EGCO Group), and Sojitz Corporation, is set to provide clean energy to over 600,000 Taiwanese households.
This achievement represents a major step forward in Taiwan’s transition towards sustainable and clean energy sources.
Patrick Lammers, CEO of Skyborn, emphasised the project’s significance, stating: “The Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm is not just any project: It is one of Taiwan’s largest offshore wind farms and Skyborn’s first operational project in APAC.
“It is proof of our ability to deliver on our commitments.”
The wind farm, located in the Taiwan Strait between 8 and 17 kilometres off the west coast of Taiwan, comprises 80 wind turbine generators spread across an 82 square kilometre area.
The generated electricity is fed into the Taiwanese power grid via two onshore substations near the townships of Taixi and Sihu in Yunlin County.
Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President of Renewables at TotalEnergies, highlighted the project’s role in the company’s renewable energy strategy, stating: “This 640 MW project will help us achieve our 2025 targets for 35 GW of gross renewable capacity and over 50 TWh of net electricity production.”
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Santiaolun Beach & Water Park in Sihu Township, was attended by representatives from the Taiwanese government, senior executives from the joint venture partners, and other key stakeholders.
The event showcased the collaborative effort between international partners and local authorities in realising this landmark project.
As Taiwan aims to generate 20 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025, the Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm’s completion represents a crucial step forward.
The project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.2 million tonnes annually, significantly contributing to Taiwan’s environmental goals.
With the commercial operations date envisaged for June 2025, TotalEnergies will take the lead in technical operations management, while Skyborn will continue to oversee other management services.
This partnership ensures the long-term success and efficiency of the wind farm, delivering lasting value for all stakeholders involved.
The successful inauguration of the Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm not only demonstrates Taiwan’s commitment to clean energy but also sets a new standard for offshore wind development in the region — paving the way for future projects and international collaborations in the renewable energy sector.
