Energy Vault (NYSE: NRGV) has secured an agreement with the State Electricity Commission (SEC) of Victoria to provide a 100 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for the SEC Renewable Energy Park in Horsham, Victoria.
This collaboration marks a significant step in Victoria’s transition to renewable, reliable, and affordable energy.
The SEC Renewable Energy Park – Horsham, one of Australia’s first fully publicly owned utility-scale renewable energy projects, will feature over 212,000 photovoltaic solar panels generating 119 MW of solar power — which is said to be enough to power 51,000 homes.
Energy Vault’s grid-forming BESS will integrate with the solar farm, providing firm, dispatchable power to meet peak demand periods with a two-hour storage duration.
With a $370 million investment from SEC, the project is set to power approximately 51,000 homes and create about 246 jobs during construction.
Preconstruction work has already begun, with full operational status expected by late 2027.
Robert Piconi, Chairman and CEO of Energy Vault, expressed enthusiasm about the company’s expanding presence in the Australian market, stating: “We are pleased to further expand our footprint of energy storage systems in the dynamic and rapidly growing Australian market and work with SEC on this innovative hybrid project architecture.”
SEC CEO Chris Miller added: “This project demonstrates SEC’s ongoing efforts to drive Victoria’s transition to renewables.”
The BESS will utilise Energy Vault’s proprietary X-VAULT integration platform, UL9540 certified B-VAULT product, and VaultOS Energy Management System.
This innovative system architecture offers flexibility in battery and inverter suppliers, as well as AC-coupled and DC-coupled configurations.
This agreement further solidifies Energy Vault’s growing commercial footprint in Australia, following recent partnerships with Enervest and ACEN Australia.
The company’s B-VAULT portfolio now includes more than 2 GWh in total projects either deployed or in development.
VIC Minister for the State Electricity Commission Lily D’Ambrosio said: “Building more renewable energy will make sure Victoria can continue to have the lowest wholesale energy prices in the market, push down energy bills and create good local jobs.
“We’re excited to partner with Energy Vault to help deliver the battery for our first 100 per cent publicly owned renewable energy project.”
