ARENA invests $20.8m in new Western Australian energy project

ARENA invests $20.8m in new Western Australian energy project

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced a significant $20.8 million funding allocation to Western Power for the development of Project Jupiter, a pioneering initiative aimed at revolutionising the integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) within Western Australia’s South West Interconnected System (SWIS).

Project Jupiter, set to be Australia’s first live DER marketplace integrated with the wholesale energy market, marks a crucial step towards modernising Western Australia’s energy system.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller highlighted the project’s importance in addressing the challenges posed by Australia’s high levels of DER penetration while capitalising on the opportunities for decarbonisation and consumer value.

The three-year project builds upon the recently completed Project Symphony and will be executed in collaboration with Western Power, Synergy, Energy Policy WA (EPWA), and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).

It aims to develop an end-to-end commercial solution for integrating various forms of DER, including rooftop solar, battery storage, electric vehicles, and smart appliances.

Western Power’s Head of Distribution Energy Transition, Andrew Blaver, highlighted the transformative potential of Project Jupiter, stating: “By 2028, all new distributed energy resources (DER) connected to WA’s network will be able to participate in a VPP, allowing households to unlock greater value from their energy investments.”

The initiative is expected to benefit consumers by introducing new retail products that enhance returns on DER investments and potentially reduce household energy costs through improved energy and grid management.

With approximately 40 per cent of SWIS households already equipped with rooftop solar panels and increasing adoption of household battery systems, Project Jupiter is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Western Australia’s energy landscape.

This investment by ARENA underscores Australia’s commitment to advancing renewable energy integration and marks a significant milestone in the country’s transition towards a more sustainable and efficient energy future.
