ARENA invests $1.7m in UNSW project to integrate consumer energy resources

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced a $1.7 million funding boost for Project CICCADA, a groundbreaking initiative led by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) aimed at enhancing the integration of consumer energy resources (CER) into the National Energy Market (NEM).

The $4.3 million project will analyse extensive real-world datasets from CER technologies, including rooftop solar, household batteries, and electric vehicles, to better understand integration challenges.

This research comes at a crucial time, as Australia leads globally in rooftop solar installations, with approximately 40 per cent of free-standing dwellings equipped with rooftop systems.

ARENA’s acting CEO, Chris Faris, emphasised the importance of CER in the clean energy transition, stating: “CER is about decentralising energy production by harnessing the power generated by rooftop solar panels, batteries and smart home devices.

“These create a more flexible and cleaner energy grid, that helps reduce emissions while improving energy reliability.”

Project CICCADA aims to address a critical knowledge gap in understanding the impacts of CER integration on the energy grid.

The research will explore how CER devices operate under various network conditions without compromising network security, power reliability, and energy quality for Australian households.

Faris highlighted the transformative potential of CER technologies, noting: “They localise energy generation, give Australians control over their energy footprint, and can potentially help balance supply and demand. This helps ensure communities are less vulnerable to energy disruption.”

Dr. Baran Yildiz, Senior Lecturer at UNSW and project lead, emphasised the importance of ongoing research in this field.

“We need evidence-based and data-driven research to improve our understanding of CER operations in real-world conditions,” he stated.

The project is expected to provide valuable insights for the Australian Energy Market Operator and energy distributors, aiding in maintaining safe and efficient network operations.

It builds upon previous work conducted by UNSW, including the ARENA-funded Project Match.

As Australia continues its transition towards clean, reliable, and affordable energy, Project CICCADA stands poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the country’s energy landscape.
