ARENA funds GridWise to streamline renewable grid connections

10 Jun, 2024
ARENA welcomes expanded funding and new programs in 2024-25 Federal Budget

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced $336,000 in funding for GridWise Energy Solutions to develop an online platform that could accelerate the integration of renewable energy into the national electricity grid.

The $800,000 ‘Dynamic Model Validation’ project will create a standardised, self-assessment tool allowing renewable project developers to validate their generator models prior to submission to network operators and regulators.

Currently, network service providers (NSPs) and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) must conduct extensive checks on each new generator model, a resource-intensive process often duplicated across multiple parties.

This due diligence causes significant delays in connecting new solar, wind and other renewable plants to the grid.

GridWise’s online validation tool aims to streamline this process by enabling developers to self-validate models against consistent standards before submission.

This pre-screening should reduce rework, avoid duplication, and allow NSPs and AEMO to focus on more complex technical assessments.

GridWise is developing the software platform in collaboration with Coleman Laboratories, AusNet, and Transgrid.

The tool will be updated regularly based on evolving standards agreed upon by energy stakeholders.

Following a trial phase, the ‘Dynamic Model Validation’ project is targeting completion by March 2025.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller said the agency will work with GridWise on implementing the tool to help fast-track Australia’s renewable energy transition.

Transgrid Executive General Manager Marie Jordan welcomed the initiative, stating it will improve submission quality while maintaining system security as New South Wales undergoes a rapid clean energy transformation.

“We look forward to working with ARENA and GridWise throughout the development and implementation of this project,” Jordan said.
