WorldGBC and ARKANCE renew partnership to drive construction sustainability

19 Feb, 2025
WorldGBC

The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) has renewed its partnership with ARKANCE, signalling a significant commitment to transforming sustainability practices in Australia’s built environment.

This collaboration aims to address the pressing environmental challenges facing the construction industry, which accounts for nearly 40 per cent of global carbon emissions.

The partnership will focus on accelerating Australia’s transition to net zero, with a particular emphasis on promoting circular economy practices and minimising waste in the country’s $568 billion construction sector.

This initiative comes at a crucial time, as Australia generates 27 million tonnes of construction waste annually.

Cameron Stuart-Nairne, Managing Director of ARKANCE ANZ, highlighted the significance of the renewed partnership, stating: “This collaboration will drive advancements toward decarbonisation of Australia’s construction sector.

“We’re laser-focused on reducing environmental impact by minimising waste, optimising resource utilisation, and delivering more sustainable, resilient buildings.”

The partnership aligns with WorldGBC’s upcoming 2025-2027 Strategic Plan, which aims to decarbonise the build sectors by 2050.

Dorota Bacal, a sustainability expert and carbon accountant, emphasised the industry-wide need for collaboration, stating: “Sustainability is more than a regulatory requirement; it’s an industry imperative.

“Our partnership with the World Green Building Council is critical for Australia to keep up with mounting pressures to meet sustainability targets and decarbonise.”

The renewed partnership builds on previous successful initiatives, including the Circular Built Environment Playbook, which has provided practical strategies for redesigning systems to enhance durability and resource efficiency.

As the construction industry faces increasing pressure to address waste, resource inefficiencies, and sustainability, this partnership is expected to inspire broader movement towards a decarbonised built environment in Australia.

By emphasising circular economy practices and advanced technology adoption, the collaboration aims to empower Australian businesses to align with global sustainability benchmarks, ultimately contributing to healthier, more equitable, and resilient communities across the country.
