Rendering transforms waste into billion dollar exports

Every year, Australia’s meat processing sector generates enormous volumes of animal co-products and used cooking oil.

Rather than treating these as waste, a specialised industry known as rendering converts them into commodities that now underpin some of the country’s most important food, energy, agricultural and manufacturing supply chains.

The scale of this resource recovery is significant. Australia’s rendering sector exports goods valued at $1.5 billion annually, transforming what would otherwise be discarded material into products used in renewable fuels, livestock production, pet food, aquaculture, fertilisers and manufacturing.

At the centre of this transformation is the humble by-product.

Fats, oils and proteins that come out of meat processing are recovered, processed and redirected into new supply chains instead of ending up as waste.

This work sits within the circular economy, an approach to resource use that aims to keep materials in productive use for as long as possible rather than letting them go to landfill or being lost entirely.

One of the fastest-growing applications for these recovered materials is in low-carbon liquid fuels.

Fats, oils and used cooking oil are increasingly sought after as feedstocks for renewable fuel production, including sustainable aviation fuel.

As global demand for lower-emission aviation fuel grows, industry attention is turning to what this could mean for Australian supply chains and whether local feedstock volumes can meet rising international interest.

The resource recovery story extends well beyond energy.

Protein meals and fats derived from rendering are used in pet food, stockfeed and aquaculture, feeding into global markets shaped by shifting international demand.

In agriculture, rendered materials also make their way into fertilisers, supporting productivity on Australian farms using inputs that originated as processing by products rather than as newly extracted raw materials.

Environmental performance is a growing focus for the sector.

Rendering operations are subject to environmental compliance requirements covering wastewater management and energy efficiency, and processors are increasingly grappling with Scope 3 emissions reporting as sustainability expectations across supply chains continue to change.

These pressures are prompting closer scrutiny of how materials are processed and how their environmental footprint is measured and reported.

The sector’s position within Australia’s broader food and agricultural system is also notable.

Rendering connects directly to meat and livestock production, recovering co-products from processing and returning valuable proteins and fats to productive use.

As demand patterns shift across food, feed and fuel markets simultaneously, the value and eventual destination of these co-products is being reshaped, with fuel markets in particular emerging as a significant new source of competition and demand for the same underlying feedstocks.

Global trade dynamics add another layer of complexity.

Commodity markets for fats, oils and protein meals are subject to changing international trade flows and economic forces that influence where Australian material ultimately ends up and at what value.

With international attendees from more than a dozen countries attending industry gatherings in recent years, the sector’s international market connections continue to expand.

What emerges is a picture of an industry operating largely out of public view, yet one that plays a measurable role in how Australia manages agricultural waste, supports renewable energy development and maintains its standing in global food and fuel supply chains.
