Solar innovation opens rooftops across Australia

Solar innovation opens rooftops across Australia

Smart Commercial Energy (formerly Smart Commercial Solar) has announced the Australian launch of Over Easy Solar, a new rooftop technology designed to open solar access to buildings previously unable to support traditional systems — while also extending energy generation beyond the midday peak.

Across Australia, a significant proportion of commercial buildings face barriers to solar adoption, from structural limitations and sensitive roof membranes to heritage restrictions and warranty constraints.

These challenges can stop projects altogether, even in cases where building owners are eager to invest in renewables.

To bridge this gap, Smart Commercial Energy has partnered with Norwegian clean energy innovator Over Easy Solar to bring its system to Australia.

Under the agreement, Smart will serve as the exclusive local distributor.

Over Easy Solar is the world’s first fully prefabricated vertical solar system.

Each unit arrives on site pre-assembled and pre-racked, enabling rapid plug-and-play installation that takes as little as 15 minutes per kilowatt peak (kWp).

The system eliminates the need for tilt frames or invasive roof work, opening solar opportunities for sites where traditional systems have been deemed unsuitable.

The Norwegian-designed solution uses vertically mounted bifacial panels in an east-west configuration, producing two daily peaks of power generation — one in the morning and another in the late afternoon.

This output pattern better aligns with the operating hours of many commercial sites, providing more usable, higher-value energy.

“This product opens new opportunities,” said Huon Hoogesteger, Founder and Managing Director of Smart Commercial Energy.

“On some buildings, it’s the only practical way to add solar at all. On others, it can sit alongside existing panels and help smooth out the midday spike, delivering energy when businesses need it.”

Developed in Norway, Over Easy Solar was originally designed for use on green roofs, membrane systems, and other lightweight engineered surfaces that prioritise insulation, stormwater management, and durability.

These roof types often struggle to accommodate conventional solar racking systems due to their non-penetrative design requirements.

Over Easy Solar’s modular, low-impact design addresses those challenges directly, enabling power generation from previously untapped roof space.

“We see Australia as an extremely relevant market,” said Trygve Mongstad, Co-Founder and CEO of Over Easy Solar.

“It has one of the highest solar energy densities in the world, which also means a large share of energy is generated around the middle of the day.

“Our vertical technology shifts generation toward the morning and afternoon, complementing existing rooftop systems.

“At the same time, the lightweight design and simple installation opens up rooftops that were previously difficult or impossible to use.”

Smart Commercial Energy plans to roll out the technology through a targeted trial phase, starting with small-scale installations on selected commercial buildings.

The trials will evaluate performance, installation speed, structural behaviour, and long-term suitability under Australian conditions.

Results from these pilot projects will be shared with asset managers and building owners to inform broader decision-making across the commercial property sector.
