NH3 Clean Energy clears environmental milestone for clean ammonia project

NH3 Clean Energy has completed the environmental survey program for its planned WAH2 Project, clearing a key regulatory hurdle as the company advances its proposed low-emissions ammonia development toward a final investment decision.

The completion of the fieldwork provides the core baseline environmental data needed to support formal state and federal environmental approval referrals.

The extensive field studies identified no threatened flora, Threatened Ecological Communities, or critical cultural heritage constraints across the primary development envelope.

The survey scope covered the proposed plant site, the water supply pipeline corridor, and the broader Maitland-to-Burrup infrastructure corridor.

Results confirmed that the main project footprint is dominated by common Pilbara vegetation types and habitats with strong regional representation.

While broader regional assessments noted the presence of some priority flora, ecological communities, and a migratory bird species, NH3 confirmed these findings align with the broader Pilbara landscape and can be managed using standard environmental planning measures.

The positive findings validate the company’s decision to locate the production facility within Western Australia’s pre-designated Maitland Strategic Industrial Area as part of its broader risk-mitigation strategy.

NH3 Clean Energy Chairman Charles Whitfield said: “The company has consistently focused on de-risking all elements of the project and the selection of the pre-designated development site in the Maitland SIA was part of that strategy.

“Having completed the environmental surveys on not only the plant site but also the logistics routes for inputs and outputs without any environmental issues being identified is a major milestone for any Australian project.”

The completed surveys will now underpin environmental referral submissions as WAH2 progresses through the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage.

Detailed cultural heritage surveys will follow as project design advances alongside commercial and financing streams, aiming for a final investment decision by the end of 2026.

The company is developing a business to deliver decarbonised hydrogen (low-emissions ammonia) into export and domestic markets at scale, via its WAH2 project.
