A new report by Geoscience Australia and the Geological Survey of New South Wales has uncovered elevated levels of natural hydrogen and helium across various locations in New South Wales.
This discovery is a significant outcome of the Australian government’s $3.4 billion investment in the “Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity” initiative, part of its Future Made in Australia plan.
The report provides Australian explorers with valuable geological information and a comprehensive methodology for testing soil gas samples for natural hydrogen, bringing scientific rigour to this emerging field.
Australia’s ancient geology makes it one of the most prospective locations for natural hydrogen exploration.
Interest in natural hydrogen has surged since the discovery of a 98 per cent pure natural hydrogen gas field in Mali in 2018.
Natural hydrogen is seen as a potential new, emission-free energy source, particularly if it can be recovered cost-effectively directly from the earth.
In Australia, hydrogen gas is primarily used in industrial processes such as ammonia and fertiliser production, while helium finds applications in medical equipment, manufacturing, research, and the space sector.
Hydrogen also shows promise in reducing carbon emissions from hard-to-abate industries, including remote power applications, heavy vehicle transportation, and iron and steelmaking.
Minister for Resources, Hon. Madeleine King MP, highlighted the economic potential of Australia’s geology, stating: “The economics of our geology is undeniable and presents us with an enormous opportunity.”
She added that the federal government is committed to unlocking Australia’s mineral potential and discovering opportunities for alternative energy and storage.
Acting NSW Minister for Natural Resources, Hon. John Graham MLC, highlighted the importance of this new data in expanding knowledge about NSW’s geological potential and understanding of natural hydrogen and helium.
He stated: “Natural hydrogen has potential as a new energy source and can support the economy’s shift to a net-zero future.”
Graham also affirmed the state government’s commitment to exploring innovative ways to create a clean energy future using NSW’s natural resources.
This report marks a significant step forward in Australia’s pursuit of sustainable energy sources and its commitment to a cleaner, more prosperous future.
