Monash University launches national hub to make steel production greener

03 Dec, 2025
Green steel reduces emissions from iron production

Monash University has launched a new national initiative aimed at making steel production greener and more sustainable.

The university’s ARC Research Hub for Smart Process Design and Controlwill unite researchers from Monash, Macquarie University, the University of Queensland, UNSW and Western Sydney University, along with industry partners, to develop smarter, low-emission steelmaking processes and support the long-term competitiveness of Australian iron ore

Hub Director, Professor Sankar Bhattacharya, from Monash University’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, said the initiative will help transform the steelmaking process.

“This hub will create smarter, cleaner and more efficient steelmaking processes. By combining simulation, AI and industrial testing, we can transform one of the world’s most critical industries to use diverse Australian ore while keeping Australia at the forefront of sustainable innovation,” Professor Bhattacharya said.

The hub will also train the next generation of engineers and researchers to help lead Australia’s transition to a low-emission industrial economy.

The university noted that steelmaking is a critical part of Australia’s economy, with iron ore exports accounting for 18 to 20 per cent of national export income.

However, steel production generates 8 per cent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. By making steelmaking sustainable, the hub not only addresses climate change but also strengthens Australia’s position in the global steel supply chain.
