Countrywide Hydrogen secures $8m funding for green hydrogen production

15 May, 2024
Countrywide Hydrogen secures $8m funding to spearhead Tasmania's green hydrogen production

Countrywide Hydrogen, a subsidiary of ReNu Energy, has made a historic stride by becoming Tasmania’s first major green hydrogen producer.

This achievement comes on the heels of an $8 million funding agreement with the Tasmanian government, solidifying their commitment to sustainable energy initiatives.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff, also the Minister for Trade and Major Investment, hailed the funding as a pivotal moment in Tasmania’s journey towards green hydrogen leadership.

He emphasised the government’s vision to establish Tasmania as a frontrunner in green hydrogen production, highlighting the significant role this development plays in advancing the state’s renewable energy sector.

The agreement with Countrywide will see the production of hydrogen at various locations across Tasmania, catering to a diverse range of users. Initially targeting the heavy transport sector and potential industrial applications, all produced hydrogen will be exclusively sold within the local Tasmanian market.

Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, praised the agreement as a direct outcome of the Tasmanian Renewable Hydrogen Action Plan.

This plan has been instrumental in laying the groundwork for the emergence of this new industry, attracting substantial investments totalling over $60 million in the state over the next three years.

The first phase of Countrywide’s plan includes the construction of a hydrogen production and heavy vehicle refuelling facility in Brighton.

This facility is projected to produce up to 800 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen.

Subsequent phases aim to expand production and refuelling facilities into the north and northwest of the state, ensuring major road freight routes are serviced by a reliable hydrogen supply.

To stimulate both supply and demand for renewable hydrogen, Countrywide will receive funding based on a per kilogram basis of green hydrogen sold to end-users.

This funding will bridge the gap between the cost of production and what end-users can afford, ensuring a stable sale price for green hydrogen and promoting the adoption of renewable energy solutions.

With plans for the Tasmanian Green Hydrogen Hub in Bell Bay advancing through a $300 million commitment to shared infrastructure, Tasmania is poised to become a key player in the global green hydrogen market.

This agreement marks a significant milestone in Tasmania’s green hydrogen journey, aligning with the world’s shift towards sustainable and alternative fuels.
