TotalEnergies has announced a significant expansion of its offshore wind presence in Germany through a new partnership with RWE.
The French energy giant has signed an agreement to acquire a 50 per cent stake in two large-scale offshore wind projects in the North Sea.
The two projects, designated N-9.1 and N-9.2, each have a planned capacity of two gigawatts (GW).
Located approximately 110 kilometres off the German coast, these wind farms were initially awarded to RWE in August 2024.
The projects come with 25-year licences, which can be extended to 35 years.
This acquisition complements TotalEnergies’ existing offshore wind portfolio in Germany, which includes the previously awarded N-12.1, N-11.2, and O-2.2 concessions.
The combined capacity of these projects will create a substantial 6.5 GW German offshore wind hub for TotalEnergies, allowing the company to optimise construction and operational costs through synergies.
Olivier Jouny, SVP Renewables at TotalEnergies, emphasised the strategic importance of this partnership, stating: “This new partnership contributes to our integrated development in the German electricity market, the largest in Europe, and will enable TotalEnergies to provide green electrons to decarbonise the country’s electricity and industry.”
Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the companies’ shared ambitions in advancing offshore wind energy.
The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has already conducted preliminary studies on the marine environment, subsoil, and wind conditions.
This data will assist RWE and TotalEnergies in planning the construction of the wind farms, which are scheduled to be commissioned in 2031 and 2032.
This partnership marks a significant step in TotalEnergies‘ strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio and contribute to the decarbonisation of Europe’s largest electricity market.
