Pacific Green, a global battery energy storage company, has received planning consent from the South Australian government for its ambitious Limestone Coast Energy Park project.
The development, located in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, will consist of two grid-scale battery energy parks with a combined capacity of 0.5GW / 1.5GWh.
The project will be developed and constructed in two phases over the next 36 months, with construction set to begin towards the end of this year.
The first phase is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026.
Tom Koutsantonis, Minister for Energy and Mining for the Government of South Australia, welcomed the investment, stating: “It’s encouraging to see more private sector investment in energy storage. An increase in storage will provide greater capacity at peak times, extending the availability of electricity generated by cheap renewables.”
The Limestone Coast Energy Park is designed to significantly strengthen the region’s grid stability and will be capable of storing almost 60 per cent of South Australia’s residential solar output for up to four hours.
This capacity will help improve energy reliability and reduce power prices for local consumers.
Joel Alexander, Managing Director & CEO of Pacific Green Australia, emphasised the company’s commitment to community engagement and local economic benefits.
Pacific Green plans to work with local suppliers and workforce throughout the construction phase and has launched a supplier portal for interested parties.
The project marks the beginning of Pacific Green’s ambitious 8.5GWh development pipeline across Australia. Scott Poulter, Chairman & Group CEO of Pacific Green, highlighted the importance of battery energy storage in supporting Australia’s rapidly growing renewable energy market.
This development follows a trend of increasing battery storage projects in South Australia. It will surpass the capacity of the well-known Hornsdale Power Reserve, also known as the “Tesla battery,” which can store up to 193 megawatt hours.
As Australia continues its transition to renewable energy, projects like the Limestone Coast Energy Park play a crucial role in ensuring grid stability and maximising the use of clean energy sources.
With construction set to begin soon, the project represents a significant step forward in South Australia’s renewable energy infrastructure.
