Western Australia’s Red Gully BESS secures planning approval

BLT Energy has secured regulatory approval for its Red Gully battery energy storage system (BESS) in Western Australia.

The Regional Development Assessment Panel greenlit the utility-scale project, marking a milestone in the state’s transition to a clean energy future.

Located approximately 105 kilometres north of the Perth CBD, the facility is set to become one of the largest battery storage installations proposed in the state.

The Red Gully BESS boasts a total ultimate capacity of 800 megawatts (MW) and 4,800 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage. The project will be constructed in stages, with Phase 1 slated to deliver up to 400MW of power and 2,400MWh of capacity directly into the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), the state’s main electricity grid.

Situated just 1.3 kilometres from Western Power’s upcoming Regans Terminal, which is on track for completion in 2027, the battery will connect via a 330kV transmission line.

Its unique location allows the project to complement WA’s Clean Energy Link – North transmission network upgrade program.

By soaking up surplus, affordable renewable energy generated during peak sunny and windy periods, the system will provide vital grid regulation and discharge power when demand peaks.

BLT Energy welcomed the planning approval, confirming it will now progress detailed engineering designs and financing ahead of Phase 1 construction.

The company also pledged to continue working alongside the Shire of Gingin, local residents, and Traditional Owners to deliver community benefits.

Beyond boosting grid reliability, the massive development promises to inject significant economic value into the region. The project is expected to drive job creation, skills development, and economic diversification, allowing local contractors and suppliers to break into or advance their careers within Western Australia’s booming renewable energy sector.
