Construction has commenced on the $400 million expansion of the Warradarge Wind Farm near Eneabba, marking a significant step forward in Western Australia’s clean energy transition.
This second stage of development will add 30 new wind turbines to the existing 51 that have been reliably providing renewable energy since 2020.
The 30 new turbines will have a combined capacity of 103 megawatts (MW), matching the size specifications of the current turbines with a tip height of 152 metres and blades stretching 67 metres long.
Upon completion in 2027, the expanded Warradarge Wind Farm will deliver up to 283 MW of power to the South West Interconnected System, making it the largest wind farm in the state by energy generation.
It will be capable of powering approximately 164,000 households annually.
Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson visited the site as earthworks began for the new turbine installations and expressed her enthusiasm, stating: “I am pleased to announce construction starting on this important wind energy project for WA.
“The expansion of Warradarge Wind Farm represents a significant increase and contribution to renewable power generation in WA.
“Our state has abundant wind resources, particularly in the Mid West region.
“This project along with other grid-scale wind and solar farms and big batteries will enable us to exit coal by 2030 – faster than any other state.
“Relying on coal-fired power generation no longer makes sense – economically or environmentally. Warradarge Stage 2 is not just about building a bigger wind farm – it’s about building a better future for generations to come.”
The project is expected to create over 120 jobs at peak construction, boosting local employment opportunities.
Warradarge Wind Farm is owned by Bright Energy Investments (BEI), a joint venture between the government-owned Synergy and Potentia Energy, with Synergy investing $28.8 million in the expansion.
Tom Frood, General Manager of Bright Energy Investments, highlighted the success and community focus of the project, stating: “Warradarge Wind Farm is recognised as one of the best in the country and Stage 2 will consolidate this success.
“We will continue to work closely with the local community and stakeholders to ensure the project benefits everyone.”
Warradarge is among Western Australia’s top-performing wind assets and contributes to the state’s goal of powering its economy with more than 9,800 MW of renewable energy, storage, and gas projects by 2029-30.
These efforts support the planned closure of coal-fired power stations, underscoring the state’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.
