In response to international attraction to the Mid-West region’s vast renewable energy potential, the Government of Western Australia has commenced an exclusive negotiation period with Progressive Green Solutions, Samsung C&T and KOMIPO (Korean Midland Power Co) to establish WA’s first green ammonia plant near Geraldton.
The major renewable energy consortium has proposed to build WA’s first green ammonia plant on two lots at DevelopmentWA’s Narngulu Industrial Estate.
Minister for Lands John Carey stated that the WA Government is committed to de-constraining land for WA’s renewable energy sector in the Mid-West region and across the state to deliver new jobs and diversify the economy.
“The strategic location of Narngulu has attracted local and foreign investors who are looking to utilise its proximity to key industrial areas and transport links including Geraldton’s port.
“Through strategic planning, we’ve been able to attract interest in our regions through making industrial land available to build businesses for the future.
“The work being done by our Government, through the Industrial Lands Authority, ensures we are ready to meet that demand,” said Carey.
First exports of green ammonia are expected in 2027 and will support the decarbonisation of power generation assets in South Korea.
The facility should produce up to one million tonnes of green ammonia annually through renewable hydrogen.

Through DevelopmentWA, the WA Government has brokered a land use solution for this project, securing a new renewable energy cluster in Geraldton to complement the planned hydrogen hub at Oakajee.
WA Minister for Energy Bill Johnston stated that Western Australia is perfectly positioned to provide the land, infrastructure and skills required to develop large scale renewable hydrogen and green ammonia projects.
“With its exceptional renewable energy resources, the Mid-West is attracting significant global interest and investments from markets such as South Korea, Japan and Europe, seeking to support the decarbonisation of their economies.
“Projects such as this are also expected to unlock significant local manufacturing and jobs in the Mid-West,” said Johnston.
Narngulu Industrial Estate is located 12 kilometres southeast of Geraldton and serves as an important general industrial site for Geraldton and the Mid-West region.
