The West Australian government is backing National Electric Motor Services (NEMS) to deliver a state-of-the-art wind energy manufacturing and refurbishment facility in Malaga.
NEMS will receive AU$500,000 through the Wind Energy Manufacturing Co-Investment Program. With the funding, NEMS will upgrade its northern Perth operations to service and refurbish heavy-duty wind turbine generators locally.
The facility will significantly improve turnaround times for wind farm operators across Western Australia, who previously had to ship faulty or worn components overseas for specialised repair work.
The grant will also allow NEMS to expand its technical capabilities. Key upgrades include new heavy lifting and handling systems, automated high-capacity testing, advanced thermal processing, and high-spec quality assurance equipment tailored to the wind energy sector.
Manufacturing Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said the investment reinforces the government’s commitment to building a domestic clean-energy supply chain.
“We’ve invested more than $5.5 million in the local renewable sector through the Wind Energy Manufacturing Co-Investment program, stimulating more than $14 million in investment,” Sanderson said.
“This program is about putting WA first and supporting our growing wind energy sector, while creating quality local manufacturing jobs.”
West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti welcomed the announcement, highlighting the economic and employment benefits for Malaga and surrounding industrial hubs.
“NEMS is an important local business, and this investment will help it grow into a state-of-the-art facility servicing the wind energy sector,” she added.
“As WA’s wind energy industry continues to grow, we want more of the jobs, skills and economic opportunities that come with it to be created here in WA and this project is a great example of that in action.”
The funding injection forms part of a broader government strategy as Western Australia prepares for 25 large-scale wind farms scheduled for development over the coming decades, including several gigawatt-scale projects.
To date, the matched-funding program has supported local operations including Australian Winders, Turbine Solutions, RCR Mining Technologies, and CamCo Engineering.
