Victoria has taken a major step toward transforming its energy future, announcing the launch of the state’s first offshore wind auction — a 2GW tender that marks a defining moment in the shift away from coal and toward renewable energy.
The announcement is being hailed by environmental and community groups as a strong indication that Victoria intends to lead the nation in clean energy development.
Advocates say the move provides crucial certainty for both investors and regional communities seeking a fair and sustainable transition.
Friends of the Earth’s Yes2Renewables campaign organiser Wendy Farmer said the initiative underscores Victoria’s determination to deliver a renewable energy system that serves both the economy and the environment.
She described offshore wind as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to replace ageing coal plants with clean, reliable power while supporting regional growth through job creation and long-term investment.
Farmer noted that Gippsland, the state’s traditional energy heartland, is particularly well placed to drive this new chapter.
With world-class wind resources and a skilled workforce, the region stands to become the focal point of Australia’s offshore wind industry.
Early modelling suggests the project could generate around 6,000 jobs and attract billions of dollars in private investment, creating a meaningful pathway for local workers and families to remain central to the state’s energy story.
According to Farmer, Victoria’s consistent policy direction, supported by mechanisms such as the emerging Electricity Services Entry Mechanism, offers reassurance to developers and communities alike.
That level of certainty, she said, is vital for major renewable projects to move forward efficiently and equitably.
The environmental group also highlighted the broader economic benefits of renewable energy investments already underway.
Record levels of clean energy generation have helped to lower wholesale electricity prices and improve energy reliability during peak summer demand.
Farmer said the establishment of a strong offshore wind sector would further stabilise the grid, reinforce energy security as coal retires, and strengthen Victoria’s climate commitments.
Friends of the Earth has been a long-standing advocate for renewable energy development across Victoria.
In 2025, the organisation led a delegation of workers and regional leaders to Canberra, pressing federal lawmakers to accelerate support for offshore wind.
Farmer said the group takes pride in helping build the political momentum behind this announcement.
As the design of the auction process nears completion, the group is calling on both government and industry to maintain a close partnership with First Nations representatives, local communities, and small businesses.
Transparent engagement, supported by evidence-based information, will be key to ensuring that the benefits are widely shared and that Gippsland’s leadership in the clean energy transition is fully recognised.
Farmer said Victoria has set the pace nationally in developing offshore wind, describing the new auction as another major stride toward a cleaner, more resilient, and affordable energy system that delivers tangible benefits for communities and the climate.
