Vestas powers South Australia’s clean future

09 Jan, 2026

Vestas has secured a new order for 40 V172-7.2 MW EnVentus wind turbines for the 288 MW Palmer Wind Farm in South Australia, a project set to mark a technological milestone for the nation’s renewable energy sector.

The contract also includes a 30-year service agreement, ensuring long-term reliability and efficiency in delivering clean power across the region.

Developed by Tilt Renewables, the Palmer Wind Farm introduces the latest state-of-the-art European wind technology to Australia for the first time.

The flagship V172-7.2 MW EnVentus turbines, part of Vestas’ advanced modular platform, are designed to capture more energy, maintain performance in harsh conditions, and further reduce the cost of producing renewable electricity.

Located near Palmer and Tungkillo on Peramangk Country, the project represents one of the first in Australia to reach financial investment decision (FID) under the federal government’s Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), an initiative designed to accelerate the build-out of low-carbon generation capacity and strengthen grid stability.

Once operational, the Palmer Wind Farm will take the long-standing partnership between Tilt Renewables and Vestas to a cumulative 1.2 gigawatts of installed capacity.

Their collaboration began nearly three decades ago with the Crookwell Wind Farm in New South Wales, which remains a landmark as Australia’s first wind project connected to the National Electricity Market.

Anthony Fowler, CEO of Tilt Renewables, said: “Palmer Wind Farm is a game-changing milestone in our partnership with Vestas, bringing hundreds of local jobs and clean energy that will power South Australia’s future.”

Danny Nielsen, Senior Vice President & Country Head, Australia & New Zealand, Vestas, added: “Palmer Wind Farm will bring Australia its first V172-7.2 MW wind turbines, setting a new benchmark in wind technology and powering a cleaner, more secure, and independent energy future.”

Construction of Palmer Wind Farm is expected to create around 200 jobs, with five permanent positions to be maintained once operations commence.

When fully operational, the 288 MW facility will generate enough renewable electricity to power approximately 142,000 South Australian homes, significantly reducing carbon emissions and supporting the state’s renewable energy targets.

Delivery of key turbine components is planned to begin in the first quarter of 2027, with commissioning targeted for the third quarter of the same year.

The extended service agreement provided by Vestas will ensure ongoing performance optimisation and operational reliability over the project’s three-decade lifespan.

As South Australia continues to lead the nation in renewable energy generation, the Palmer Wind Farm stands as a cornerstone development combining global innovation with local opportunity.

Backed by both government policy support and industry expertise, the project highlights how strategic collaboration can accelerate Australia’s pathway toward a sustainable, low-emission future.
