UGL kicks off construction for Neoen’s Muchea Battery

16 Apr, 2026

Engineering firm UGL has started major works for Neoen’s Muchea Battery, with site work officially underway for the six-hour long-duration battery energy storage system.

The project, which utilises Tesla Megapack technology, represents a critical addition to Western Australia’s grid infrastructure.

UGL has demonstrated rapid momentum since the contract was awarded, successfully completing early site establishment before the end of 2025.

These preparatory works included a 1.3-kilometre access road upgrade and the development of a main laydown area, ensuring a safe and efficient foundation for the upcoming construction phases.

An early challenge navigated by the team was the complex approval process for works within the gas pipeline corridor and the road reserve.

By working in close collaboration with Main Roads Western Australia, the Shire of Chittering, and the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline team, UGL secured the necessary permissions to maintain a compliant and steady work schedule.

The project site is now busy with activity as bulk civil works progress. The workforce is expected to grow significantly in the coming months as additional teams mobilise to handle civil foundations, electrical infrastructure, battery installation, and final commissioning.

Sandeep Kamath, UGL Project Manager, said: “Muchea is an important project for the state, our client and our partners.

“From day one we have focused on building a strong safety culture, working closely with stakeholders and delivering high-quality outcomes.

“This project shows what can be achieved through planning, teamwork and a shared commitment to excellence.”

UGL continues to solidify its position as a major player in Australia’s renewable energy sector.

The company has already commissioned 3.6 GWh of battery storage across 13 solar farms and currently has an additional 2.15 GWh under construction.

With the civil phase well underway at Muchea, the team is now preparing for the arrival of the Tesla Megapacks, positioning the project to reach its next major milestone in the shift towards long-duration energy storage.
