TotalEnergies, through its subsidiary Offshore Wind One GmbH, has been awarded the maritime concession N-11.2 by the German Federal Network Agency following recent auctions in Germany.
This new concession, located approximately 120 kilometres northwest of Heligoland in the North Sea, covers an area of 156 square kilometres and has a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW).
The acquisition of N-11.2 will enable TotalEnergies to establish a substantial 3.5 GW offshore wind hub in the German North Sea, leveraging synergies with the 2 GW concession N-12.1 secured by the company last year.
As part of the agreement, Offshore Wind One GmbH will make a payment of €196 million to the German Federal government by June 2025.
These funds will be allocated to marine conservation efforts and the promotion of environmentally friendly fishing practices.
Additionally, the company will contribute €88 million annually to the electricity transmission system operator responsible for connecting the project, for a period of 20 years following the site’s commissioning.
The concession has been granted for an initial term of 25 years, with the possibility of extension to 35 years.
Stéphane Michel, President of Gas Renewable and Power at TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm about the award, stating: “The award of the N-11.2 site will enable TotalEnergies to establish a 3.5 GW offshore wind energy hub, building on the quality of both sites and taking advantage of the development and operational synergies between them.”
This latest acquisition aligns with TotalEnergies‘ broader strategy to expand its presence in Germany’s renewable energy sector.
The company has recently acquired Quadra Energy, one of the top three aggregators of renewable electricity production in the country, as well as Kyon Energy, a prominent developer of battery storage solutions.
Michel added that TotalEnergies is “very pleased to contribute to Germany’s decarbonisation targets”, highlighting the company’s commitment to supporting the country’s transition to cleaner energy sources.
