TotalEnergies expands battery storage projects in Belgium

TotalEnergies expands battery storage projects in Belgium

TotalEnergies has announced the development of a second battery storage project in Belgium.

The new project, located at TotalEnergies’ depot in Feluy, will have a power rating of 25 MW and a capacity of 75 MWh, utilising forty Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion containers supplied by Saft.

The project is expected to start by the end of 2025.

Along with the company’s Antwerp refinery battery storage project, the two projects represent a total investment of nearly €70 million (approximately AU$115 million) and will increase TotalEnergies’ storage capacity in Belgium to 50 MW / 150 MWh.

The battery storage sites are crucial for the resilience of the electricity system, providing flexibility and helping to solve grid congestion problems.

They also support the growth of renewable energies, which require solutions to compensate for their intermittency.

TotalEnergies Senior VP of Integrated Power Olivier Jouny stated: “We are pleased to announce this new storage project in Feluy, just a year after we began our Antwerp project, which should be operational by the end of the year.

“These projects are fully in line with our integrated development strategy for electricity, not just in Belgium, but globally.”

TotalEnergies is a major player in the Belgian electricity market, with a portfolio of 900,000 customers as an electricity supplier.

The company also produces electricity, relying on assets such as the Marchienne-au-Pont CCGT power plant (430 MW), the Plate-Taille hydroelectric storage (140 MW), and an offshore wind farm in the Belgian North Sea (300 MW).

TotalEnergies is developing solar and onshore wind projects with a portfolio of 300 MW.

In electric mobility, the company operates over 10,000 charging points across the country.

Saft, a wholly owned subsidiary of TotalEnergies, specialises in advanced technology battery solutions for the industry.

For more than 100 years, Saft’s batteries and systems have provided critical safety applications, back-up power, and propulsion for customers worldwide.

Saft’s technology delivers high performance in various environments, from land to sea, air, and space.
