Sunergise switches on New Zealand’s largest rooftop solar array

18 Jun, 2026

Sunergise has switched on New Zealand’s largest-ever rooftop solar installation at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare’s East Tāmaki campus in Auckland.

The 5.3-megawatt system is more than double the size of the country’s previous record holder, a 2.3-megawatt rooftop array at Mānawa Bay, which was also constructed by Sunergise.

Spanning across two buildings, including the 5 Green Star-rated Daniell Building, the project took nine months to complete.

It was delivered via Sunergise’s SunPlus power purchase agreement (PPA), meaning Fisher & Paykel Healthcare incurs zero upfront capital expenditure and pays only for the electricity the system generates.

The grid-connected array is expected to produce more than 6,600 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, enough to power over 1,000 average New Zealand homes, while offsetting 486 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The installation comes amid a Middle Eastern conflict-induced oil supply crisis in early 2026 has intensified corporate urgency around local energy resilience.

Driven by these economic pressures, the nation’s solar sector is booming, with industry capacity projected to triple from 860 megawatts in 2026 to more than 2,100 megawatts by 2031.

“This is a landmark project for New Zealand. A 5.3-megawatt system on the rooftop of one of the country’s most recognised companies shows what’s possible when businesses commit to clean energy at scale,” said Paul Makumbe, CEO and Founder of Sunergise.

“The current fuel crisis is a reminder of how exposed New Zealand is to global energy shocks.

“Solar installations, like what we’ve built at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, give businesses long-term price certainty and energy resilience, something that’s never been more valuable.”

Sunergise has now installed more than 50 MWp of solar across New Zealand and the Pacific.

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Vice President of Supply Chain, Facilities and Sustainability, Jonti Rhodes, said the investment was a smart business strategy.

“Adding New Zealand’s largest rooftop solar array is a natural extension of our commitment to minimising environmental impact while continuing to grow our research, development and manufacturing capability,” Rhodes said.

“Investing in renewables is not only the right thing to do, it’s the smartest business strategy to implement. Hopefully this serves as an example to other New Zealand businesses.”
