Thousands of solar panels are set to be installed on apartment buildings across Victoria under the next phase of a joint state and federal push to cut energy bills and expand access to renewables.
The state and federal governments have opened the third round of the $32 million Solar for Apartments program, which provides up to 5,000 new rebates for apartment residents.
The initiative is designed to reduce electricity bills by as much as $500 a year for households and extend access to rooftop solar to apartment dwellers, including renters.
The program offers rebates of up to $2,800 for individual households, or up to $140,000 per apartment block, covering installations on shared rooftops managed by owners corporations.
Since its launch in February 2023, more than 3,200 apartment, townhouse and unit residents across Victoria have taken part, with around half of completed installations on rental properties.
Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the initiative ensures apartment residents can access the same savings previously only available to free-standing homes.
“We’re making it easier for Victorians living in apartments to enjoy the benefits of free energy from the sun and save up to $500 a year on their energy bills with solar,” she said.
Commonwealth Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the expansion reflects a commitment to making renewables accessible to all residents, regardless of housing type.
“Whether you’re in a house or an apartment, everyone should be able to take advantage of our abundant cleaner, cheaper solar energy to bust bills for good,” he said.
Applications span metropolitan Melbourne, with the strongest uptake so far in the Merri-bek, Port Phillip, Yarra and Darebin council areas.
Rebates are available for apartments, units and townhouses with access to a shared rooftop under owners corporation arrangements.
The government said the new round aims to increase participation further, helping apartment households reduce costs while contributing to Victoria’s renewable energy targets.
