The Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) recently published 2026 Integrated System Plan (ISP) confirms that a mix of renewable energy, storage, and new transmission remains the lowest-cost roadmap to secure the nation’s grid.
The blueprint reveals that everyday Australians are taking the lead in the energy transition. Rapidly falling battery costs and world-leading rooftop solar adoption are heavily reducing the need for some grid-scale investments, allowing household energy resources to play a far larger role than previously anticipated.
AEMO Chief Executive Officer Daniel Westerman said the plan maps out the most cost-effective path forward as electricity consumption near-doubles and ageing coal-fired power stations retire.
“The direction for Australia’s energy future remains clear: it’s renewable energy, supported by storage, connected by transmission and distribution, and backed up by gas,” Westerman said.
Under the primary ‘Step Change’ scenario, the transition will require approximately AU$106 billion in annualised capital investment through to 2050.
While transmission infrastructure accounts for $6 billion of that spend, AEMO notes it will unlock lower-cost energy and save consumers $30 billion in avoided fuel and operating costs.
“Australia’s energy transition requires a whole-of-system approach, one that maximises value from generation, storage and transmission with the growing contribution of homes and businesses through rooftop solar, batteries and more flexible energy use,” Westerman said.
Regional communities are set to sit at the centre of this rollout. Regional advocacy group RE-Alliance welcomed the report, highlighting that renewables supplied 45 per cent of Australia’s electricity over the last financial year.
However, the group noted that wind capacity must double by 2030, meaning regional communities need a stronger say in development.
RE-Alliance National Director Andrew Bray urged governments to expand community-led solution funding and support neighbour benefit schemes for those hosting crucial power lines.
“New transmission infrastructure has become controversial, but this plan reiterates its crucial role,” Bray said.
“We need to focus on what can be done to better support these communities and ensure governments start making serious investments in robust, community-led solutions.”
AEMO emphasised that any near-term delays to these actionable transmission projects will directly increase reliability risks and elevate costs for consumers.
The final roadmap was shaped by two years of extensive modelling and consultation with close to 2,000 stakeholders, including consumer advocates and industry planners.
