Australian clean energy company PolarBlue is preparing to build a state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing hub at Bell Bay in Tasmania, setting the stage for an economic boom in the region.
The announcement follows three years of close engagement between the company and state authorities.
Under Phase One of the development, the hub is expected to create 150 long-term local jobs, backed by a massive AU$1.5 billion private capital investment over its first three years.
Once operational, the Bell Bay facility will focus on manufacturing zero-emission energy infrastructure built on cutting-edge Australian technology, helping position Northern Tasmania at the forefront of the global green transition.
Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Felix Ellis, welcomed the venture, stating that the project directly aligns with the state’s broader strategy for economic growth and industrial capability.
“Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are ensuring Tasmania is a place to invest, do business and grow,” Ellis said.
“PolarBlue’s vision to deliver globally significant outcomes using Australian technology is welcome in Tasmania.”
Ellis said the massive injection of private capital would provide widespread benefits for the entire state throughout the construction phase while securing vital employment for the region over the long haul.
“The significant private capital commitment will be a boon for the entire state, driving investment over three years while they build the hub,” the minister said.
“This work will support the provision of 150 long-term jobs, which will in turn support the Northern economy. Tasmania is open for business, and we welcome PolarBlue’s commitment.”
PolarBlue founder Grant Reynolds highlighted the company’s focus on commercial viability and praised the state’s straightforward approach to development.
“Almost everything the modern world runs on got cheaper as we made more of it. Energy never did,” Reynolds said.
“We never asked Tasmania for a cent, only a fair process, and we got one. Bell Bay is where we start advanced manufacturing at scale. We are not asking anyone to take that on faith – we are asking them to come and watch.”
