Pacific Blue to build $100m battery in South Australia

Pacific Blue to build $100m battery in South Australia

Pacific Blue, Australia’s sole 100 per cent renewable energy generator and retailer, is set to commence construction of its $100+ million grid-scale battery in Clements Gap, South Australia, in June.

The project is estimated to be completed in early 2026.

The 60-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will provide a duration of 130-megawatt hours, which can be released to the grid during periods of peak demand, supporting grid stability and playing a vital role in Australia’s broader transition to renewable energy.

Located next to Pacific Blue’s existing wind farm, the BESS will support South Australia in meeting its 2027 renewable targets.

The project is a significant milestone for Pacific Blue in realising its 2-gigawatt pipeline of capacity and energy storage solutions, contributing to Australia’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Domenic Capomolla, Pacific Blue’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasised the importance of energy storage in the renewable energy transition.

“The focus of Australia’s energy transition so far has overwhelmingly been on the generation of renewable energy — storing that energy and deploying it to support grid stability is the missing piece and a critical component of Australia’s renewable energy transition,” he said.

Capomolla also highlighted the company’s positive relationship with the local community, having invested more than $700,000 into 150 sustainable projects through its Sustainable Communities Fund since the commissioning of the Clements Gap Wind Farm in 2010.

The Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP, Minister for Energy and Mining, welcomed the investment, stating that it will help reduce peak wholesale prices by increasing available power when needed most.

He also acknowledged the project’s contribution to South Australia’s transition to cleaner, more affordable, and reliable energy.

Pacific Blue has partnered with Enzen Australia, a global sustainable energy solutions provider, for the delivery of the Clements Gap BESS.

Dileep Viswanath, Enzen Australia CEO and Enzen Group Deputy CEO expressed excitement about the partnership, which will allow Enzen to further build its credentials and capabilities in the growing BESS market and accelerate Australia’s transition to net zero.

With the construction of the Clements Gap BESS, Pacific Blue and its partners are taking a significant step towards a more sustainable and reliable energy future for South Australia and the nation.
