NSW funding accelerates community-led energy projects

02 Oct, 2026

The New South Wales government has invested into a practical training initiative designed to kickstart mid-scale clean energy projects across the region.

The Community Power Agency’s Community Energy Incubator program has secured support through the NSW government’s Community Energy Activation Program (CEAP).

The agency is one of 12 community and non-profit organisations selected to share in a AU$4.7 million funding pool aimed at expanding critical on-the-ground support for local energy projects.

Launched as a pilot program in October 2025, the Incubator provides hands-on training and mentoring to empower grassroots groups.

The program targets mid-scale renewable developments, particularly community-led solar farms, guiding local groups from initial feasibility assessments to investment readiness.

Co-funded by the NSW government and philanthropic climate organisation Boundless Earth, the expansion aims to build technical knowledge, economic viability and social licence within participating communities.

“Mid-scale community energy projects are a triple win,” said Community Power Agency Director Kim Mallee.

“They unlock the ‘missing middle’ of the distribution network, making use of existing, underutilised infrastructure. They put locals in the driver’s seat, giving communities the ownership and agency they’ve been calling for.”

Kathryn Maxwell, President of the Southcoast Health and Sustainability Alliance and a participant in the Incubator, noted that regional groups have long struggled to navigate the complex commercial landscape of mid-scale generation.

“Our community has wanted to develop a mid-scale solar farm for years, but there’s no support to level the playing field in the utility-scale space,” Maxwell said.

“The Incubator is exactly what’s needed – practical, hands-on support to help communities realise their energy ambitions.”

Since 2011, the Community Power Agency has assisted more than 50 community energy groups Australia-wide to plan and construct tailored renewable initiatives.

The latest funding boost will ensure local groups avoid common development pitfalls while delivering affordable, resilient clean power to their regions.
