Neoen breaks ground on first German battery project in Saxony-Anhalt

French renewable energy giant Neoen has begun construction on its inaugural German battery storage project, marking a significant milestone in its expansion into the German market.

The Arneburg Battery, located near Arneburg in Saxony-Anhalt, commenced construction in December 2024.

With a capacity of 45 MW / 90 MWh, the Arneburg Battery is scheduled to become fully operational in 2026.

This state-of-the-art energy storage facility will play a crucial role in supporting Germany’s electric grid, enhancing both its stability and resilience.

The project represents Neoen’s first foray into the German market, where the company harbours ambitious growth plans.

Backed by a robust pipeline of projects exceeding 1 GW at various stages of development, Neoen aims to establish itself as a key player in Germany’s burgeoning battery sector.

Andrés Marx, Managing Director of Neoen Germany, highlighted the project’s significance, stating: “Starting construction of the Arneburg Battery is a major step in our commitment to supporting Germany’s shift toward clean, reliable energy solutions.

“Arneburg is paving the way for Neoen’s future in Germany, where we have high ambitions and multiple projects under development.”

Neoen brings extensive expertise in developing and operating large-scale batteries to the German market.

The company’s global storage portfolio currently comprises 2.3 GW / 5.3 GWh of facilities in operation or under construction, including some of the world’s largest battery projects.

The Arneburg Battery will provide essential grid services, including intraday power trading and balancing, helping to maintain real-time equilibrium between production and consumption.

This capability is particularly crucial as Germany continues its transition to renewable energy sources.

Xavier Barbaro, Neoen’s Chairman and CEO, highlighted the project’s importance, stating: “The launch of the Arneburg Battery, only two years after establishing our presence in the country, is a major milestone.

“Batteries play an increasingly pivotal role in integrating more renewable energy into the grid while boosting its stability and resilience.”

As Germany pursues its ambitious renewable energy targets, including doubling its solar capacity by the end of the decade, projects like the Arneburg Battery will be instrumental in ensuring grid stability and facilitating the integration of clean energy sources.

With construction now underway, the Arneburg Battery project signals Neoen’s strong commitment to the German market and its broader mission of supporting the global transition to sustainable energy systems.
