Melbourne’s western councils receive $2.2m boost for EV transition

Melbourne's western councils receive $2.2m boost for EV transition

Three local councils in Melbourne’s west are set to accelerate their decarbonisation efforts with a significant funding boost from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

The $2.2 million grant will support the Local Council BEV Integration Project, aimed at transitioning council fleets to electric vehicles.

The initiative, valued at $8.9 million in total, will see the deployment of:

  • 65 light battery electric vehicles (BEVs)
  • 7 heavy BEVs
  • Associated charging infrastructure

These vehicles will be distributed across Wyndham City Council, Moonee Valley City Council, and Brimbank City Council, all members of the Western Alliance for Greenhouse Action (WAGA).

The project aims to demonstrate how various vehicle types can be transitioned to zero-emissions alternatives.

With a collective fleet of over 400 vehicles at the selected council sites, this initiative presents a significant opportunity for large-scale decarbonisation.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller emphasised the project’s importance: “This project particularly highlights the intersection of clean energy, sustainability, innovation and the role local councils have in the clean energy transition.”

He added that local councils have been early adopters in this space, often reflecting challenges experienced by other industries and sectors.

The BEVs will be introduced for various council operations, including:

  • Waste management
  • Parks and roads maintenance
  • General travel

Set to be deployed over three years, the project is scheduled to conclude in June 2027.

A key focus of the initiative is to address common barriers to fleet electrification, such as:

  • Technical issues
  • Cost considerations
  • Day-to-day operational challenges

The project will also explore charging infrastructure requirements and strategies for effective EV fleet management.

This initiative aligns with the Australian Government’s broader commitment to cleaner transportation.

In 2022, the government announced the Driving the Nation Fund, allocating $500 million to invest in cheaper and cleaner transport solutions, including charging innovation and fleet decarbonisation.

As local councils lead the way in adopting sustainable practices, this project serves as a model for other sectors looking to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to Australia’s net-zero targets.
