Goto Floating Wind Farm has commenced operations, the first commercial floating wind project in Japan.
The wind farm, which began operations on January 5, is the first commercial facility to utilise a hybrid spar-type floater featuring a steel upper section and a concrete lower section.
The Goto Floating Wind Farm generates 16.8 MW of energy through eight wind turbines built offshore in Goto City in Nagasaki Prefecture.
The wind farm is the first facility to be certified by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, under the Renewable Sea Area Utilization Law.
The Japanese government has set targets to install 10 GW of offshore wind power capacity by 2030 and up to 45 GW, including floating offshore wind, by 2040.
Goto Floating Wind Farm aims to promote renewable energy and help improve the quality of life for local communities.
Local companies are expected to be involved in the wind farm’s operations and maintenance.
The electricity generated by the facility will be supplied preferentially to local retail electricity providers.
